Information about the monument: The Tomb of Sultan Süleyman the Lawgiver is in the burial area of the Süleymaniye Mosque within the Complex. It has the most unique plan among the tombs built by Sinan. Its octogonal portico plan is thought of as a symbolic reference to the Dome of the Rock. The 451 Chalkan Council declarations were carved on stone and attached to a wall in the Hagia Sophia. Later in the 16th century, the Ottomans mounted this marble slab above the entrance of Sultan Süleyman’s Tomb. This slab was found located during the most recent restoration of the building, copied, and translated. The tomb is open to visitors every day of the week, free of charge. A modest donation is optional.
