  • Information about the monument: This structure, although amongst the more modest-scale examples of Sinan’s architecture in Istanbul, provides one of the best examples of 16th century traditions, largely through its proportions and details. Mahmut Çelebi served twice as the Minister of Finance for the Ottoman Empire. He was also well known as a significant Ottoman calligrapher. The inscription over the main entrance is believed to been written by Mahmut Çelebi himself. The dome of the mosque collapsed during the 1766 earthquake and the roof cover was later replaced by a wooden structure. Recently, the mosque went through restoration (2007). Replicas of an ink holder and pen have been placed on the top of the dome symbolizing the profession of Mahmut Çelebi. The open tomb of Mahmut Çelebi, who died in 1546, is nearby, within the walled-in burial area for this mosque.
